The world in which Shuyan is set has many elements from Chinese history and traditional culture woven into it, however, Shuyan isn’t based on any specific dynasty or time period. Instead, it pulls inspiration from the 5,000 years of Chinese culture, and this includes the cultural values, mythical elements, the different characteristics of each dynasty, and the deeper philosophies of its ancient societies.
